Welcome

Hello to all,

Our summer has been anything but slow. We have new journals to announce and their agenda is imperative. I was delighted to accept an invitation from Katina Strauch to be interviewed in Against the Grain, and it appeared in their August issue (it's also online on their site… and ours!) I hope you'll read it because it includes Q&A about Open Access, spam publishing, the future role of librarians, other STM issues, and a few personal comments to enable you to know me better.

Another very exciting event this month was the landing of Mars Rover, Curiosity. Last November, NASA invited the Editor-in-Chief of our peer-reviewed journal, Astrobiology, to come to Cape Kennedy for the launch of the Rover, and NASA extended the invitation to me as well. My husband and I enjoyed every second. Many members of the editorial board also came to Florida and talked about the importance of astrobiology to advance the life sciences as well as planetary research.

President and CEO Mary Ann Liebert interviewed in Against the Grain
From the interview:

ATG: You said in [an] interview that libraries have become much more selective and cost-conscious. With all the new products being launched and libraries having their budgets cut, what do you think will happen? Are you seeing cancellations of subscriptions for pay-for-view, for example?

MAL: We are not seeing much attrition in subscriptions, although libraries have migrated to online. One of the reasons we may not be experiencing worrisome cancellations is that we do not force libraries to take big packages that they may not want, and librarians appreciate this flexibility. Also, we are not a "me too" publisher, and seek to establish unique publications that will advance an embryonic field.

New Editorial Leadership
We are pleased to welcome the following new journal Editor:

Thyroid – Editor-in-Chief: Peter Kopp, MD
Dr. Peter Kopp is Associate Professor in the Division of Endocrinology, Metabolism and Molecular Medicine and serves as Director ad interim of the Center for Genetic Medicine at the Feinberg School of Medicine of Northwestern University in Chicago. His clinical activities focus on patients with thyroid dysfunction and thyroid cancer, and he is a member of the Thyroid Panel of the National Comprehensive Cancer Network. He is a member of the Board of Directors of the American Thyroid Association, and has published more than 120 publications in the field of endocrinology and endocrine genetics, including book chapters in major textbooks. Dr. Kopp will assume his duties for Thyroid in August 2012, with a full transition to Editor-in-Chief in January 2013.

On the Road with Geoff Worton

May saw us exhibiting at the Medical Library Association Annual Meeting in Seattle. Attendance was good at just under 1,500 attendees and 563 exhibitors and the weather was all that one expects in Seattle. Thanks to all of you that stopped by the Mary Ann Liebert, Inc. booth; it was good to be able to meet with you, to have the opportunity to learn about your issues and to share information about new developments at Mary Ann Liebert, Inc. And congratulations to those of you who won prizes on our baseball-themed wheel-of-fortune! Our new 2012 titles, especially Advances in Wound Care and Games for Health Journal attracted a lot of interest, with some interesting conversations at our booth about how institutions are using games and gaming technology in their treatment of patients.

In July we were at the Special Libraries Association Annual Conference in Chicago. It seems so strange to say July and SLA in the same sentence, I'm so used to the Conference being in June. I'm not sure if the change in date affected attendance, but we were certainly very happy to have the chance to meet with so many clients, including a strong representation from overseas. We were pleased to be able to support the Pharmaceutical and Health Technology Division by co-sponsoring their breakfast. This event, which was extremely well attended with twice as many delegates as initially projected, provided a wonderful opportunity for informal conversations in a relaxed setting. Highlights at the Mary Ann Liebert, Inc. booth were the two new titles we will be launching in 2013 – New Aerospace and Big Data – especially as these titles see our company publishing in some new research areas.

Coming up in September and October are trips to Mexico City and to Frankfurt for the annual Book Fair. I look forward to seeing you there!
