Submitting Your Manuscript
Submitting your manuscript to Foodborne Pathogens and Disease delivers a comprehensive benefits program that ensures high-quality review of your research and maximum impact for your work. Please note: Securing a token does not automatically create an account in our peer-review system. If you do not already have an account, you will be asked to create one before you can begin your submission.
Submissions do not need to be completed at once. Submitting authors/agents may begin the submission process, save their work, and return to the site to complete the upload(s) at a later time. Authors whose submissions do not comply with the Instructions for Authors will have their papers un-submitted so that the file(s) may be adjusted accordingly. Directions regarding the necessary corrective actions will be provided in an email to the corresponding author at the time the paper is un-submitted. The submitting author/agent will then be provided the opportunity to re-upload the corrected file(s). Target Audience & Scope
The target audience for Foodborne Pathogens and Disease is the medical, veterinary, agricultural and research communities. Foodborne Pathogens and Disease will bridge the gap between these diverse groups. The scope of Foodborne Pathogens and Disease is comprehensive and includes topics such as: emerging foodborne pathogens; health problems/disease caused by foodborne pathogens; emergence of drug resistance in foodborne pathogens; methods and technology for rapid and accurate detection of foodborne pathogens; strategies to destroy or control foodborne pathogens in food production and processing environments; development of novel strategies for the prevention and control of plant and animal diseases that impact food safety; and dissemination of innovative foodborne pathogen/food safety educational materials. Several of the articles/topics will likely have political appeal as well. Foodborne Pathogens and Disease is a monthly peer-reviewed international journal that publishes original research papers and short communications on important new information on foodborne pathogens research and diseases caused by foodborne pathogens.
Foodborne Pathogens and Disease invites scientists from all countries to submit papers to the Journal. Timely review articles and special reports on topics such as agroterrorism, food allergies, and the safety of organically grown and genetically modified foods are also within the Journal’s purview. The Editor-in-Chief will invite authors to write review articles.
Original research manuscripts should not exceed 3,000 words (excluding abstracts, tables, figure legends, disclosure statements, and references) and must be presented in the standard format described herein:
Short reports and case studies are generally based on limited experiments that test a timely, original hypothesis of importance. Short reports and case studies should not exceed 1,000 words with no more than ten references and one table or figure and must contain a hypothesis, objectives, sufficient detail in methodology for repetition of the work, results with brief discussion, and references.
Short (300 words) Letters to the Editor on topics of concern to readers, including comments on publications with rebuttals from authors, if needed, may be submitted to the Editor-in-Chief. The letters should be titled and will be published at the discretion of the Editor-in-Chief. Authors of letters are subject to the same copyright release requirements as other authors.
Editorials and Commentaries may be on any issue relevant to the field, but must be brief and appropriately documented by data.
Review papers of up to 5,000 words in length, are summaries of developments in the field. All review paper submissions are subject to peer review. The Editor-in-Chief will make the invitation and ensure the quality of the review with the assistance of the editorial board.
To help defray the cost of printing the Journal requests payment of page charges of $75 per printed page. Please note that payment of page charges can be waived under certain circumstances and is not a prerequisite for publication.
All submissions will be acknowledged. Contact the Editor if receipt of manuscript hard version has not been confirmed within 15 days of dispatch. Members of the Editorial Board will review manuscripts promptly.
All authors, including the co-authors, should be responsible for a significant part of the manuscript. All authors and co-authors should have taken part in writing the manuscript, reviewing it, and revising its intellectual and technical content, and all must sign the cover letter accompanying the hard copy of the manuscript. Any author whose name appears on a paper assumes responsibility and accountability for the results.
PREPARATION OF MANUSCRIPTS
Title page. The title page should include the authors' names and affiliations, a running title of about 45 characters (including spaces), and the full contact information for the corresponding author (i.e., mailing and/or street address, telephone and fax numbers, and E-mail address.)
Abstract. You will be asked to provide a structured abstract of no more than 300 words. The abstract should review important objectives, materials, results, conclusions, and applications as concisely as possible. The abstract disseminates scientific information through abstracting services and is a convenience for readers.
Key words. You will be asked to enter key words or phrases; these will be used to create the subject index of Foodborne Pathogens and Disease. In most instances, these key words should be taken from the title.
Text. Organize the text as follows: Introduction (questions, objectives, reasons for research, and related literature), Materials and Methods, Results, Discussion, Conclusions, Acknowledgments, and References. At the first usage of a term, spell out the term and give the abbreviation or acronym in parentheses. Thereafter, use the abbreviation/acronym alone. Use generic names for drugs where possible. If you wish to use a proprietary drug name, the first time it appears use the generic name followed by the proprietary name, manufacturer, city, and state in parentheses. If proprietary names must be used, include trademark information. Scientific names for species must appear with genus spelled in full on the first occurrence and abbreviated thereafter. Family names should appear on first occurrence of uncommon species. All microorganisms must be named by genus and species in accordance with the latest edition of Bergey’s Manual of Determinative Bacteriology Lippincott, Williams & Wilkens, 9th ed., 1994.
Bacteriology. The name of the genus must appear in full the first time that the microorganism is cited in the abstract, in the body of the paper, and in each table and figure legend. Thereafter, the genus can be abbreviated by its first initial unless it will be confused with other microorganisms cited in the paper, in which case each genus should be abbreviated to use enough letters to avoid confusion. The names of all microorganisms should be in italics. Specific strain designations and numbers should be used when appropriate. Viruses are to be given the classification and names recommended by the International Committee on the Nomenclature of Viruses.
Acknowledgments. The author should acknowledge only those people and institutions that have made significant contributions to the study. Details of sources of funding must be given.
All authors are expected to disclose any institutional or commercial affiliations that might pose a conflict of interest regarding the publication of a manuscript. Institutional affiliations, as indicated on the title page, should include all corporate affiliations and any funding sources that support the work. Other types of affiliation, including consultantships, honoraria, stock ownership, equity interests, arrangements regarding patents, or other vested interests should be disclosed in the Acknowledgments section.
References. The references should be cited in the text using the name/date method. The reference list at the end of the paper should be organized alphabetically by name and year. Provide the names of all authors for each reference. Abbreviate journal names according to BIOSIS Serial Sources (BIOSIS, Philadelphia, PA, 2003). For accepted papers not yet published, the citation should read (in press). If references to personal communications or unpublished data are used, cite them parenthetically in the text, not in the references. Authors are responsible for the accuracy of references. References should be presented as follows:

Reprint address. On the title page, provide the name, address, and E-mail of the person to whom reprint requests should be directed.
Tables. Create each table as a separate file. Use Arabic numerals to number tables. Details of experimental conditions should be included in the table footnotes. Table legends and footnotes should be double-spaced.
Figures & Illustrations
Please follow these guidelines for submitting figures:
- Do NOT embed art files into a Word or PDF document.
- Line illustrations should be submitted at 1200 dpi.
- Halftones and color should be submitted at a minimum of 300 dpi.
- Save as either TIFF or EPS files.
- Color art must be saved as CYMK – not RGB.
- Black and White art must be submitted as grayscale – not RGB.
- Do NOT submit PowerPoint, PDF, Bitmap or Excel files.
Please name your artwork files with the submitting authors name i.e. SmithFig1.tif, SmithTable2.tif etc. Authors who do not follow these guidelines may have their submission returned to them without being reviewed.
You will be given directions on how to correct any files which do not pass.
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION ABOUT ART FILES
Converting Word or Excel files: Perhaps the best and easiest way to convert Word or Excel files into a format which is suitable for print is to scan them using the below guidelines:
• All files should be scanned at 100% size.
• 300 dpi
• Final color mode: cmyk
• save file as: .tif or .eps

Authors are responsible for requesting and securing permissions. Figures, tables, and text taken from other sources must be accompanied by a written statement from both author and publisher granting permission for reproduction. Include written permission from authors to cite unpublished data or papers still in press. Papers accepted become the copyright of Foodborne Pathogens and Disease and may be reprinted only by the publisher. The Publisher may authorize reproduction of graphs, tables, and illustrations for books and periodicals. Requests to reproduce material published in Foodborne Pathogens and Disease must be made in writing and addressed to the Publisher.
