Many people may be surprised to hear that Augmented Reality (AR) is not new. Over the past 30 years we have seen AR technology used for both cognitive and physical rehabilitation of patients with a variety of neurological disorders and complex disabilities. The often-Herculean efforts to get the older technology to work have been generously repaid in the types of significant clinical improvements that we have seen. What actually is new now is the wide availability of relatively low-cost technology which can be much more easily adapted modified and customized by the researcher for use by clinicians.

We are interested in larger clinical studies which have shown significant and unique advantages using augmented reality for clinical training, treatment of patients, and as robust assessment tools. The focus of the paper should not be on the technology, but rather validated clinical outcomes and significant economic benefit.

The total world healthcare market is over $6 trillion — this market demands rigorous clinical studies which can undergo evaluation by payors, government entities, and adoption by our leading institutions. We have not yet begun to fully explore all the possible uses of AR in healthcare. In addition to rigorous studies, we ask authors to speculate about what comes next or additional creative and unique uses of this important technology.

We are seeking high-quality review articles and original articles on the following topics related to augmented reality research:

  • Cognitive Rehabilitation
  • Physical Rehabilitation
  • Medical and Surgical Training
  • Augmented Reality in the Operating Room and Hospital
  • Emergency Applications using Augmented Reality
  • Applications involving Body Self-Image and Social Awareness
