IB IN DEPTH Special Issue: Developing Microbial Solutions to Advance Sustainable Agricultural Productivity

With a continued expansion of the world population and the pressure that places on natural resources there is a need to develop innovative and robust technologies to increase agricultural productivity and sustainably conserve those natural resources important to agriculture. Thus, a second green revolution is needed to meet this challenge, and once again we turn to advances in the life sciences and engineering to innovate viable solutions for healthier soils, more efficient use of nutrients, and more environmentally benign yet effective pest control alternatives. Given the importance that plant microbiomes play in developing viable solutions, expanding our understanding of these complex microbial systems and our ability to manipulate them are essential to addressing this challenge. Fortunately, our understanding of microbe-microbe and plant-microbe interactions has expanded tremendously over the past two decades, and life sciences technology has made it possible to develop plant probiotics that are predictable, controllable, and verifiable. We are arriving at a junction where the life sciences, systems science, and engineering are coming together to allow for the development of robust microbial products to ensure sustainable agricultural productivity and improved economic returns to growers. The goal of this In Depth special issue of Industrial Biotechnology is to chronicle the breakthroughs in plant probiotic science and technology, and the efforts by visionary entrepreneurs to develop and deploy these probiotic solutions.

Industrial Biotechnology invites you to submit original scientific papers in the form of Reviews, Original Research, Short Communications, or Methods for publication in a special issue on agricultural microbe-based industrial biotechnology R&D and commercial applications, slated to publish in print and online June 2018.

Topics to be considered include:

  • Understanding abiotic and biotic interactions in plant microbiomes
  • Mathematical modelling of plant-microbe interactions in complex environments
  • Verification, tracing and systems biology of plant probiotics introduced to plant microbiomes
  • Assessment of the agronomic challenges to commercial deployment of plant probiotics

  • Biology, development and the potential of microbial metabolites
  • Workforce development for the next green revolution
