New Vital Web Resource on Foodborne Illnesses Lauded by Editor of Foodborne Pathogens and Disease

New Rochelle, NY, April 20, 2011-The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has redesigned its web page dedicated to the FDA Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA) to keep consumers, industry, food-safety professionals, local and state regulators, and others better informed about its activities. "This important web site will provide consumers with timely new information on several aspects of food safety," says Stephen P. Oliver, PhD, Editor-in-Chief of the peer-reviewed journal Foodborne Pathogens and Disease and Co-Director of the Food Safety Center of Excellence, The University of Tennessee. The Journal is published by Mary Ann Liebert, Inc.

The new web page ( provides more consumer-friendly information about food recalls and answers "frequently asked questions" regarding the enactment of new laws, as well as short videos in which FDA food safety experts explain how the agency is developing standards to minimize risk of potential hazards.

"This new resource will allow consumers to know what FDA is doing and to become more engaged in many aspects of food safety," adds Dr. Oliver.

Foodborne Pathogens and Disease is an authoritative, peer-reviewed, monthly international journal that covers all aspects of food safety including public health, agricultural sciences, veterinary medicine, and food processing. Topics include emerging and re-emerging pathogens, emergence of drug resistance, bioterrorism and agroterrorism, methods and technology for rapid and accurate detection, strategies to destroy or control foodborne pathogens in food production and processing, and development of novel strategies for the prevention and control of plant and animal diseases that impact food safety. The Journal provides a forum for the cross-fertilization of ideas and strategies across diverse fields of science.
