Bruce Bigelow is founding partner of Charitable Development Consulting, a consulting firm that provides specialized fundraising services to charities throughout the country. He served until 2003 as senior vice president at Hood College in Frederick, Maryland, where he worked for the previous 14 years. Prior to that appointment, he was the associate vice president for development and, earlier, the director of planned and major gifts at Gettysburg College.
In addition to his service on the board of directors of the National Committee on Planned Giving, Bruce has chaired the national task force on planned giving research for NCPG, and the Committee on International Outreach, and helped to write the national standards of conduct for planned giving professionals. He currently chairs a national NCPG Task Force that has developed guidelines for counting and reporting planned gifts. In 1992 he chaired the national NCPG Annual Conference. He is a member of the editorial board of both the Journal of Gift Planning and Planned Giving Today and previously was a member of the board of Planned Giving Mentor. A founding member of the Chesapeake Planned Giving Council, he served as that organization's president and is also a long-standing member of the CANARAS Group. Bruce has written extensively in the field of planned giving and has presented a number of papers at a variety of development seminars and conferences.
Bruce holds a BA from the College of Wooster in mathematics and history and both an MA and PhD from the University of Chicago and spent 10 years in the classroom before entering the planned giving field.
