INSTRUCTIONS FOR AUTHORS

JOURNAL OF WOMEN’S HEALTH, a peer-reviewed journal, focuses on diseases and medical conditions that hold greater risk for and are more prevalent among women. It features clinically oriented papers, but review papers and case reports are also considered for publication. The emphasis of the Journal is on clinical research, especially in clinical trials, and on the basic science components relevant to those trials. The Journal does not publish papers that have been submitted elsewhere.

Manuscript Submission and Copyright Agreement Form

The Copyright Agreement form (available from web site
at transfer_of_copyright.pdf) should be submitted once your paper has been accepted for publication.  Manuscripts cannot be published without this form. The corresponding author is responsible for obtaining signatures of coauthors. Authors not permitted to release copyright must still return the form signed under the statement of the reason for not releasing the copyright.  Upon acceptance of your paper, please fax the Copyright Agreement form to 914-740-2108.

SUBMISSION OF MANUSCRIPT

Manuscripts must be submitted online using the following url:  http://mc.manuscriptcentral.com/womenshealth

Please read all the instructions to authors before submitting.

  • A running title of no more than 45 characters (including spaces).
  • Provide a structured Abstract of no more than 250 words, stating the background, methods, results (including the sample size), and conclusions drawn from the study.
  • You will be asked to enter 3–5 keywords or phrases.
  • Papers should contain original data concerning the course (prognosis), cause (etiology), diagnosis, treatment, prevention, or economic analysis of a clinical disorder or an intervention to improve the quality of healthcare.

You will also be asked for the names and e-mail addresses of at least five potential preferred reviewers familiar with the field.  Please make sure preferred reviewers are not from your university or institution with whom you have collaborated.  Anyone whom the author does not want to be considered should also be named as a non-preferred reviewer.

The author will also be asked to confirm that the material has not been published or submitted for publication elsewhere. All material published in the Journal will be copyrighted by Mary Ann Liebert, Inc.

AUTHORSHIP

All authors, including the co-authors, should be responsible for a significant part of the manuscript. All authors and co-authors should have taken part in writing the manuscript, reviewing it, and revising its intellectual and technical content. Any author whose name appears on a paper assumes responsibility and accountability for the results.

PREPARATION OF MANUSCRIPT

All manuscripts must be prepared in accordance with the "Uniform Requirements for Manuscripts Submitted for Biomedical Journals." Prepare text of manuscripts in Microsoft word double spaced. Leave ample margins on the sides, top, and bottom of pages. The order of items in the manuscript is: title page, abstract, text, acknowledgments, references, reprint address, legends, and tables. Each page, including the title page, must be numbered in the upper right-hand corner. Number pages consecutively.

Text.  Maximum word count should not exceed 4000 words.  In General, the text (which must be double spaced) should be organized under the headings: Introduction, Materials and Methods, Results, Discussion, and Conclusions. Use only standard abbreviations, which can be found in the AMA’s Manual for Authors & Editors or the Council of Biology Editors Style Manual.  At first usage, spell out terms and give abbreviations in parentheses. Thereafter, use only abbreviations. It is not necessary to spell out standard units of measure, even at first usage. Use generic names for drugs if possible. If you wish to use a proprietary drug name the first time it appears, use the generic name followed by the proprietary name, manufacturer, and city in parentheses.

Acknowledgments.  The author should acknowledge only those people and their institutions that have made significant contributions to the study.

Letters to the Editor

Journal of Women's Health will consider Letters to the Editor commenting on the scientific content of an article published in the Journal. Letters should not exceed 400-500 words of text and 5 references. Letters submitted for publication must be original and must not be submitted to any other publication simultaneously.

Disclosure Statement

Immediately following the Acknowledgments section, include a section entitled “Author Disclosure Statement.” In this portion of the paper, authors must disclose any commercial associations that might create a conflict of interest in connection with submitted manuscripts. This statement should include appropriate information for EACH author, thereby representing that competing financial interests of all authors have been appropriately disclosed according to the policy of the Journal. It is important that all conflicts of interest, whether they are actual or potential, be disclosed. This information will remain confidential while the paper is being reviewed and will not influence the editorial decision. Please see the Uniform Requirements for Manuscripts Submitted to Biomedical Journals at http://www.icmje.org/index.htlm#conflicts for further guidance. If no conflicts exist, the authors must state “No competing financial interests exist."

When naming your figure files, please label them with the corresponding author’s last name, followed by a period (.), and then list the figure number.  Ex:  Jones.Fig1.  Label figures and tables inside the files in addition to naming the file with the figure or table number.  (ie:  When figures or table files are opened, the figure or table number should appear inside the file.)

____________________________________________________________________

IMPORTANT:

Please upload individual files of all manuscript material — do NOT upload a single PDF file containing all text, figure, and table files of your paper.  Once all individual files are uploaded on to Manuscript Central, the system will automatically create a single PDF proof for you and the peer-review process.

If no conflicts exist, the authors must state “No competing financial interests exist."

References.  References must be prepared double spaced and numbered consecutively as they are cited in the text (using superscript numbers). References appearing for the first time in tables and figures must be numbered in sequence with those cited in the text where the table or figure is mentioned. Use journal abbreviations as provided by MEDLINE, National Library of Medicine. List all authors when there are six or less. When there are more than six, list the first three, followed by et al. If references to personal communications or unpublished data are used, they are not to be in the list of references. They should be referred to in the text in parentheses: (F. P. Haseltine, personal communication). Include, among the references, papers accepted but not yet published; designate the journal, and add "In Press."  The maximum number of references may not exceed 100.
