STATEMENT OF PURPOSE AND POLICY
Telemedicine and e-Health is a peer-reviewed publication encompassing all aspects of clinical telemedicine practices, technical advances and enabling technology, distance learning and a special emphasis on the outcome and impact of telemedicine on the quality, cost effectiveness and access to health care. Original research papers should be limited to 3000 words and report structured studies of the science of telemedicine, its technology and impact. Brief Communications are reports of lesser scope not necessarily designed to gather data for statistical analysis but still of pertinence to the readers of our journal. These communications would most often represent preliminary work or focused analyses. Brief Communications should not exceed 1000 words and one figure. Reviews are invited and should not exceed 3000 words. These reports should reflect broad consideration of an area of telemedicine and serve as a resource to the reader. All Original Research Papers, Brief Communications and Reviews will be peer-reviewed. These submissions must be original works and not under consideration for publication elsewhere. Manuscript Submission and Copyright Agreement Form
The Copyright Agreement form (available from web site at transfer_of_copyright.pdf) should be submitted once your paper has been accepted for publication. Manuscripts cannot be published without this form. The corresponding author is responsible for obtaining signatures of coauthors. Authors not permitted to release copyright must still return the form signed under the statement of the reason for not releasing the copyright. Upon acceptance of your paper, please fax the Copyright Agreement form to 914-740-2108.
PREPARATION OF MANUSCRIPT
Original Research Papers: The title page should include the authors' names and affiliations, the source of a work or study (if any), and a running title of about 45 characters. Please indicate the author to whom correspondence should be sent when you submit. The abstract should not be more than 250 words and should be self-explanatory without reference to the text. Abstracts should contain separate sections as follows: Objective, Materials and Methods, Results, and Conclusion. Abstracts for perspective papers should not have these separate sections. Papers should follow this format: Abstract, Introduction, Materials and Methods, Results, Discussion, Acknowledgments, References. The body of the MS should not exceed 3000 words. Number pages consecutively. At the end of the paper, give the name and address of the individual to whom reprint requests should be directed.
Brief Communications: An abstract of 250 words should outline the purpose, methodology and results of the communication. The format for the body of the MS may vary depending upon the nature of the report but may not exceed 1000 words. References should be included and style instructions below apply.
Reviews: An abstract of 250 words should state the subject of the review and its importance. The abstract should summarize the most important points of the review. The body of the MS should take on headings appropriate for the topic (for example Introduction, Technology Issues, Regulatory Issues, Clinical Studies, Future Events). The body of the MS should not exceed 3000 words. The style instructions are below.
Other Communications: The editors welcome letters concerning items published in the journal. Book reviews and potential news items are also welcome. These communications should be sent electronically directly to the editorial office.
Please adhere to the following style to avoid delays in publication.
TABLES AND ILLUSTRATIONS
Tables and Illustrations
Use Arabic numerals to number tables. Do not repeat information that is given in the text, and do not make a table for data that can be given in the text in one or two sentences. Provide titles for all tables. Define all acronyms in table footnotes. All other types of table footnotes should be designated using superscript letters, not symbols. When naming your figure files, please label them with the author's last name, followed by the figure number. Ex: SmithFig1.tif. Label figures and tables inside the files in addition to naming the file with the figure or table number. (ie: When figures or table files are opened, the figure or table number should appear inside the file.)
Electronic submission of art MUST follow these guidelines:
- Do not include any illustrations as part of your text file.
- Do not prepare any figures in Word as they are not workable.
- Line illustrations must be submitted at 1200 DPI.
- Halftones and color photos should be submitted at 300 DPI.
- Please submit only TIFF or EPS files.
- Color art must be saved as CYMK not RGB or INDEX. If RGB files are submitted, the files will be converted to CYMK, and some slight color variation may occur.
- Do NOT submit PowerPoint or Excel files. Adobe is the software of choice.
Color illustrations: Authors will be charged for the cost of color separations and printing at the rate of $275 per piece of color art plus $1,200 per page of color. The publisher will provide the author with a more precise cost estimate when the figures are received.
Disclosure Statement
Immediately following the Acknowledgments section, include a section entitled “Author Disclosure Statement.” In this portion of the paper, authors must disclose any commercial associations that might create a conflict of interest in connection with submitted manuscripts. This statement should include appropriate information for EACH author, thereby representing that competing financial interests of all authors have been appropriately disclosed according to the policy of the Journal. It is important that all conflicts of interest, whether they are actual or potential, be disclosed. This information will remain confidential while the paper is being reviewed and will not influence the editorial decision. If no conflicts exist, the authors must state “No competing financial interests exist."

REFERENCES
Reference citations are not permitted in the abstract of a paper. References should be presented in the following style: Journal paper: Murphy RL, Bird KT. Springfield, IL: Charles Thomas, 1975:54-88. If it is necessary to cite an abstract, this should be so designated. Authors are responsible for the accuracy of the reference and are reminded that inaccurate references are highly frustrating to the reader, the cited author, and indexing services. Abbreviations of journal titles should follow Medline.
NOMENCLATURE
Follow the Uniform Guidelines for manuscripts submitted to biomedical journals (Ann Intern Med 1988; 108:258-265). Papers will be edited to conform to the individual style of Telemedicine and e-Health.
PERMISSIONS
The author must obtain permission to reproduce figures, tables, and text from previously published material, even if that is the author's own work. Written permission must be obtained from the original copyright holder (generally the publisher, not the author or editor) of the journal or book concerned. An appropriate credit line should be included in the figure legend or table footnote, and full publication information should be included in the reference list. Written permission must be obtained from the author of any unpublished material cited from other institutions and should accompany the manuscript.
CONFLICTS OF INTEREST
All authors must disclose any associations that pose real or perceived conflicts of interest in connection with the manuscript. Authors must acknowledge all funding sources supporting the work. Authors should also disclose any financial interests that they may have in the company supporting the work.
REPRINTS
Reprints may be ordered by using the special reprint order form that will accompany the proofs. Reprints ordered after the issue is printed will be charged at a substantially higher rate.
